Why HSH?

Twenty-four years ago, as a new neighbor in this vibrant community, I stumbled upon an enriching opportunity: the PAl's program, which offered after-school classes. And learned that The Schoolhouse was a school. Intrigued by the program’s promise, I felt a strong desire to be part of this initiative that focused on nurturing young minds, and so I began volunteering. In no time, my three sons were accepted into the program, and it quickly became a cornerstone of our family’s life. As they immersed themselves in the activities, I witnessed not just their academic growth, but a blossoming of character that filled me with pride. The lessons they learned were invaluable: they discovered the true meaning of kindness and acceptance, embracing their peers for who they were rather than how they looked. It was heartwarming to see them open their hearts and minds, forging friendships across diverse backgrounds. And I have been part of the staff for 19 years.

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission?

Attending webinars and professional development (PD) sessions is a valuable way to grow my skills and knowledge in various fields.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I love to dance, sing, and roller skate. I also have a ball python snake.

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission? I volunteer at a children’s hospital because it helps me develop empathy, social responsibility, and a strong sense of community, which are key to being socially grounded and personally growing in line with our school's values.

I am always eager to learn more about education. I am currently pursuing a certificate of completion in Child Development where I continue to learn how to better support each child in their overall growth.

HSH aligns with my teaching philosophy and allows me the space to teach creatively to the whole child. The strong sense of community and being connected with families past and present brought me to the school and has kept me here for over 30 years.

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission?

My door is always open for past and present students.

Outside of HSH, I connect with families on my drive home to check in and share student 'glows and grows'. As often as possible, I attend student events like plays, sporting events, art showcases.

Lifelong learning is important. I attend PD's, participate in online trainings, follow educators on social media for creative and innovative ideas and trends, and reach out to peers for support and suggestions.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I am still close friends with my very first friend that I met when I was three. 55 years strong!

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission?

The growth and longevity of my neighborhood and community, along with neighboring communities and neighborhoods, is crucial in order to maintain livelihoods and the well being of the population. I frequently visit small businesses and regularly attend events curated by friends and acquaintances geared toward promoting cultural confidence.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

It is an honest truth that I collect miniatures. I have always had a fascination with Barbie items, Polly Pockets, and other miscellaneous objects such as Care Bear micro plushies and World's Smallest.

I love working at the Hollywood Schoolhouse because it's a place where I feel truly connected to both the students and my colleagues. Every day, I'm inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm of the students, and I enjoy being part of a supportive team that values both academic and personal growth. The sense of community here makes it a special place to work, and I feel proud to contribute to the positive impact we have on our students' lives.

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission?

I am constantly researching and learning new curriculum to support our philosophy in education. I am constantly going to conferences and reading up on the latest research in education.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I was born in the United States but my family roots are from England. I love to travel and have been all over Europe, North America, Australia, and parts of Africa. Last summer I took a two month road trip all the way up the western coast of the US, took a ferry to Vancouver Island, then came back traveling through the Cascades.

Why HSH?

For the past 23 years, HSH has served as a home away from home. It has helped me with my growth and maturation, and witnessed my highs as well as lows as both a teacher and human being. It has celebrated with me during my moments of joy, and has let me cry on its proverbial shoulder during my more difficult times. For these reasons set forth, HSH is more than a school to me. Rather, it is a nurturing and loving family that wholeheartedly welcomes one's individuality and contribution to the community.

What work do you do outside HSH to support our mission?

I support the raising of funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Years ago, I befriended a preschooler at HSH who was afflicted with the disease. This is when I decided to use my platform as an international bench press competitor to bring DMD to light. I continue my dedication to nurturing young minds by serving as a soccer coach for my son's team.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I lived in three continents by the time I was 12 years old. I speak five languages. I hold the bench press world record in my weight class, having won the world championships 11 times. I am an avid soccer enthusiast, and love coaching it.

I write articles (LA Parent Mag Sept/Oct 2024) and books (Histria Books 2925) to promote bilingualism and biliteracy. I also help my daughter fundraise for the Book World nonprofit. I also run Habla Blah Blah to inspire joyful young learners of Spanish and French through song & silliness!
