Making Caring Common

Making Caring Common, a research-based project founded by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is an initiative upon which we are embarking this 2023-24 school year. The mission of this program is to inspire a generation of children who will have the compassion and skills to ensure a more just, empathetic, and kind community. The program is comprehensive in nature – it includes trainings for our faculty and staff about how to intentionally create positive relationships with our students, lessons to promote inclusivity, and resources for how to carry the concept into your own home.

HCGSE provides a variety of resources to help you implement the Making Caring Common program in your life!

Dear Hollywood Schoolhouse Students and Families,

I hope you had a wonderful summer full of fearless curiosity and are enjoying the start of another year of inspired learning. Our school faculty and staff are excited to welcome students back to campus. To embody our school’s mission and achieve our goal of fostering a strong, caring school community, we will embark on Phase One of our Making Caring Common program, entitled “Kickstart the Year”, from September through November.

We have designed Kickstart the Year in collaboration with the research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The program is a whole-school educational experience for students and faculty that focuses on community and relationship-building. During this phase, students will come to understand and contribute to school and classroom norms; practice and play games and activities focused on empathy, community-building, and deep listening; and begin to form connections across the school campus. I look forward to this opportunity for our school community to focus on building essential relationships and skills to create a foundation for success this year.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions. We will be touching on this subject at Back to School Night on September 14th, when we will be able to share our progress from the first few weeks of the year. I look forward to seeing you all there and connecting with you about this inspiring new initiative.
I am excited to embark on this journey with you all.
Ilise Faye
