Second Grade Students Travel to Chinatown

The 2nd Grade classes recently took a trip to Chinatown!
It is a 2nd Grade tradition to venture off to Chinatown via The Metro. As a way to prepare for our trip, we read stories in class about a subway station, and celebrating Lunar New Year. We discussed subway safety and etiquette prior to our trip, and the children were excited to ride the train. Some other topics that we reviewed before our big day was how to be polite in a community, and how to dine as a group in a restaurant. Groups of students constructed subway stations out of recycled materials, and had to include weekly vocabulary words into their creations.
While we were on our trip, the students worked in teams to complete a photo scavenger hunt, searching for real life objects connected to our stories. Children safely explored the streets of Chinatown, enjoyed a delicious lunch with friends, and made purchasing choices at the outdoor shops. It was a wonderful experience to live out the topics in stories!
